From Kourtney Kardashian's new "intimacy" gummies to a luxe "sensual body care" brand, consumer goods are signalling that our desires are dictated by trends.
The sexual wellness industry will become a behemoth and like the health and fat industry will solve nothing. We still have obesity after all despite all the gyms and books and cookbooks and pills.
Some will get wealthy, some will be happy and most will feel more inadequate than they did before.
It’s unfortunate because I like Julia Fox. But this seems extremely disingenuous. Also, considering how many women are celibate (myself included) or just finding celibacy because of the disconnect between men and women, it’s a very odd time to be launching something like this.
It's all pretty shallow and feels like a flash in the pan. I'm betting on science and purpose (eg, closing the women's health research gap which has a lot of overlap with the pleasure gap) to be what sustains a brand in the long-term. These people aren't even using words right, and perpetuating misinformation. A disservice to women, masked as empowerment to get dollars.
If there's an opportunity to sell people with legit problems/issues woo-woo placebo quality bullshit, influencers will be right on it. If they don't really have an issue/problem, they'll try to convince them that they do. Mass social media has essentially transformed the public marketplace into what one would've seen on the streets of London 150 years ago. "Perilli's magical elixir . . ."
i'm also very curious as to how Julia Fox describes celibacy—is it sex with others? is it sex with herself? I wanna know the different ways we can define that.
Women's sex drives really are lower than men's. I'm hardly a gender essentialist, but it's just empirically true that women are less horny and more violent than men on average. It's true in every culture across every time period.
There's also evidence that women's sex drives tend to be more "responsive" whereas men's tend to be more "spontaneous."
Further, there's evidence that women tire of monogamy faster than men do, on average (Dr. Wednesday Martin). And, women are on average more sexually open and sexually flexible than men (Dr. Justin Lehmiller).
The sexual wellness industry is trying to medicalize sex differences. Women already want sex less than men. Being in long-term, monogamous relationships with men just enlarges the existing libido gap.
Like the rest of the medical industrial complex, the assumption behind the sexual wellness industry is that men are the default and that women are defective men who need to be fixed with potions, creams, and pills.
But few people are ready to have that conversation.
There 🪵 wood 🐝 bee more SEX if a woman ♀️👠 would consider saying " Yes !!" when asked out on a date 🌹📅 4 a change. When a woman ♀️ tells me to practice " self 💕 love", does that mean 💗 that I should go fuck myself !! ?? 🌹👠♀️💗
Thank you once again Robert! I'm well aware of what the hypothetical woman ♀️ was implying, I was merely satirizing the euphemisms. "Self 💕 love?? So you mean you don't 🤔 think any woman ♀️ will date 🌹📅 me, hence I should jerk myself to sleep 💤😴."?? 🤔
The rapidly expansion of the sexual wellness industry is perhaps just a symptom of endemic lack of intimacy and feeling of inadequacy (both generalized and sex related) in our society.
Definitely not defending Kardashians peddling sex products but! I really hope that women who are choosing celibacy because men suck are still masturbating. And masturbation (and everything) can be enhanced by lube/toys/gummies…maybe? But omg buy them from one of the many other women owned sex companies
I had to rediscover pleasure after 50—on entirely new terms. It’s not about products; it’s about presence. First with myself, then with a partner. When sex is elevated, it deepens.
I really love the line “my birthday by the way”. It’s kind of genius!

1. "What Is the 'Sexual Wellness' Industry Trying to Tell Us?"
The "Sexual Wellness" Industry is telling us that they want to make a buck.
2. Julia Fox is telling us that she seeks attention.

Yes this! It’s one thing not to have sex because dating is so bad but self pleasure is important and feels good 🙃

If so, it’s probably not that terrible an idea…
Thanks, Robert !! 👑🍟 It's strange how woman ♀️👠 feels compelled to fabricate 🐂 bullshit excuses.
I actually meant you going fucking yourself…
